Welcome to Up North Learning Center (UNLC)!

My name is Dawn Casteel, and I’m honored to serve as the principal of UNLC. This is my fifth year in this role and my 26th year in education. I began my career in early childhood education as a preschool teacher and quickly discovered my passion for teaching. Over the years, I’ve expanded my experience in various areas of education, including Early Childhood Special Education, Behavior Specialist, Resource Room Teacher, Special Education Coordinator, Administrator and Coach.

I firmly believe that children thrive in safe, flexible, and collaborative environments where high expectations are paired with meaningful support. To create such an environment, educators must remain lifelong learners, actively engage families and communities, and work together creatively to meet the diverse needs of every student. I am deeply committed to ensuring that all students can learn and succeed when surrounded by a supportive and dedicated educational community.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family and dogs. You’ll often find us boating, kayaking, hiking, snowshoeing, attending hockey games, reading, or crocheting.
